Governance, Leadership and Ethics

Students who will thrive in Huron’s new Major in Governance, Leadership & Ethics (GLE) recognize we live and work in an increasingly complex, interdependent and uncertain world. They understand, or are determined to understand, the need for new decision-making models and the influences of different leadership styles. They are keen to participate in civic affairs and contribute to the well-being of their local and global communities.

GLE is designed to help students fully grasp the challenges of contemporary governance and develop the know-how for leadership that is inclusive, accountable and effective. The goal of GLE is to develop Leaders with Heart who are able to meet the growing demand for ethical and transformative leadership in the private, public and non-profit sectors.

GLE Minor in Environmental Stewardship

The GLE’s Minor in Environmental Stewardship brings together different disciplinary perspectives on climate change and sustainability, examining governance, leadership and ethical issues arising over time at scales from the global to the local. Environmental Stewardship is a term that has deep historical roots and is now beginning to be used widely again in natural resources management and conservation, and urban governance and community sustainability practices. The GLE Environmental Stewardship Minor provides learning opportunities to integrate theory and practice, exploring the scientific and Indigenous knowledge systems, as well as the spiritual and ethical principles, and public policy frameworks, that inform environmental stewardship in the 21st century.

Ethics

A central intellectual theme in GLE studies explores questions about the common good or public interest and how these ideals are contested and constructed through governance and leadership. Today’s societal “grand challenges”, from climate change to income inequality and systemic discrimination, all require collaborative solutions that combine the resources of public, private and nonprofit sectors. However, complex ethical issues arise through collective action as the various stakeholders represent different values, interests, and constituencies. GLE students explore enduring conflicts among rights, obligations, and community, and investigate how such tensions might be directed toward achieving collective well-being.
