HURON’S MOS PROGRAM ADDS TWO PIONEERING SPECIALIZATIONS TO OFFERINGS
March 7, 2022
LONDON, ON – Huron is thrilled to announce the launch of two new specializations within its Management of Organizational Studies (MOS) program: Business Intelligence and Marketing & Sustainability.
“These new specializations reflect our ongoing commitment to adapting our course offerings to the changing job landscape our students find themselves in once they graduate”, said Dr. Bill Irwin, Department Chair of the MOS Program. “Our priority is to provide our graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in a future where many of the jobs they will be applying for don’t yet exist.”
Starting in September 2022, second year students in the MOS program will have the option to choose Business Intelligence or Marketing & Sustainability as their specialization, provided they have completed the individual course requirements in their first year.
A key component of the liberal arts experience at Huron is that students get exposed to multiple academic areas throughout their studies, allowing them to develop a more holistic approach to problem-solving and overall management practices. This was something that Dr. Aria Teimourzadeh, Faculty lead for the Business Intelligence specialization, made sure to address when developing the program: “In today’s world, analytical skills have become vital to the success of many business organizations. Our new Business Intelligence program allows students to acquire and combine Information Technology skills with traditional Social Sciences knowledge.”
Usually reserved for graduate studies, Business Intelligence is gaining momentum as a key area of study for business leaders of the future. Being one of Canada’s first post-secondary institutions to offer Business Intelligence at the undergraduate level, Dr. Irwin is confident graduates of this program will be highly sought-after by employers, and “will be able to compete directly with graduate students for the same jobs.”
Dr. Mathew Maxwell-Smith, Faculty lead for the Marketing & Sustainability specialization, sees the combining of two historically distinct fields as a reaction to an evolving business landscape, “Marketing graduates today are not only expected to help their organizations build profitable relationships with customers, but also help their organizations ensure that value is provided to society and the planet at large.”
With the two new specializations, MOS now has a total of 5 specializations available:
- Organizational Studies, Policy, and Ethics
- Finance and Administration
- Accounting
- Business Intelligence
- Market & Sustainability
