Huron Joins BlackNorth Initiative
Huron is proud to announce it has signed on to the BlackNorth Initiative CEO Pledge.
The BlackNorth Initiative was created by The Canadian Council of Business Leaders Against Anti-Black Systemic Racism. Business leaders from across the country are signing the pledge and committing themselves and their organizations to seven goals to create a diverse workforce that comprises not only Black individuals but also those who are Asian and other racialized communities in Canada, Indigenous peoples, members of the LGBTQ+ community, persons with disabilities and women.
Huron President, Dr. Barry Craig, signed the CEO Pledge, which commits to the hiring of a diverse workforce. By committing to this initiative, Huron is making its stance known that Leaders with Heart are pulled from every facet of society and that businesses will only benefit by hiring and promoting diverse individuals.
“When Wes Hall, the founder of this initiative and Vice-Chair of Huron’s Board of Governors brought this pledge to my attention, I didn’t hesitate to pledge Huron’s support and commitment for this initiative,” said Dr. Craig. “This type of pledge is long overdue and, sadly, much needed. Huron is pleased to be included with such a dynamic group of industries and industry leaders who are committed to ensuring everyone in society is seen and heard and hired.”
The seven goals of the CEO pledge are:
- Working through the BlackNorth Initiative, we will increase our efforts to make our workplaces trusting places to have complex, and sometimes difficult conversations about anti-Black systemic racism and ensure that no barriers exist to prevent Black employees from advancing with the organization;
- Working through the BlackNorth Initiative, we will implement or expand unconscious bias and antiracism education;
- We will share best – and unsuccessful – practices;
- We will create and share strategic inclusion and diversity plans with our board of directors;
- We will use our resources to work with members of the Black community through the BlackNorth Initiative;
- We will engage Canada’s corporate governance framework; and,
- We will create the conditions for success.
