Dear Students:
As the Provost and Dean of Arts and Social Science: welcome (back for some of you) to Huron!
One of the best parts of Huron is the community we’ve built. With that in mind, I am excited to share with you that we are reviving and reimagining a Huron tradition this year: the Huron1Read program.
With Huron1Read, the Huron community—students, staff, and faculty—comes together around a book. This allows us to have an intellectually engaging and ongoing conversation as a community about the themes raised in the Huron1Read.
The 2021-22 Huron1Read Book
I’m excited to tell you the 2021-22 Huron1Read text is Eden Robinson’s novel, Son of a Trickster.
Son of a Trickster explores Indigenous identity in the present-day Canadian colonial context combining the tropes of teenage fantasy fiction with Indigenous spirituality and gritty realism. In the midst of public discussion about residential schools and their legacies this is a poignant novel for us to take up and explore.
Further, Huron1Read has selected a music album to accompany the book: “We Are the Halluci Nation” by The Halluci Nation (formerly called A Tribe Called Red). Musically, the album consciously fuses a variety of Indigenous musical traditions with hip-hop music. Lyrically it explores questions related to colonialism, racism, Indigenous identity and more.
Huron1Read Community Events
Throughout the year, there will be multiple opportunities for you to get involved in Huron1Read. For some of you, content will be incorporated into your courses. As well, events such as Novel Reads, a bi-weekly book club, and a visit from the author will be organized on campus. There will be a Huron1Read contest complete with prizes. More details on these events, including dates, times and locations will be forthcoming.
In sum: the Huron1Read will be a vital part of our campus and community life this year. I urge you to participate!
How To Get Your Copy of Huron1Read’s Son of a Trickster
First year students will receive a copy of Son of a Trickster in their O-Week kits. All upper year students, staff and faculty can pick up their copy at the Library or the Welcome Centre.
I am very excited about this year’s Huron1Read – I believe we can expand on the successes of prior years to make this a genuinely community-wide reading program and an intellectually vibrant community-building exercise, which is unique to Huron in the Canadian post-secondary landscape.
All my best,
Dr. Geoff Read
