LONDON, ON – After 21 years working with seniors in long-term and retirement care, Nicole Kristoff never imagined that she would take a leap and begin working with youth in some of the most transformative years of their lives. What she did know, however, is that she wanted to make a difference, and Huron University is providing the perfect place to do just that.
As the Coordinator of International Student Engagement, Nicole is a cornerstone of support and encouragement for students navigating the challenges of moving away from home – and an entirely new country. Her role goes beyond logistics; she also fosters belonging, offers a comforting presence, coordinates enriching events on and off campus, and even shares in cultural celebrations alongside students.
Welcoming Huron’s International Students
Affectionately known as ‘Mama K’ within Huron’s international student community, Nicole has more than earned that title. From the moment students arrive in Canada, Nicole and her team of dedicated student leaders warmly welcome first year international students right at Toronto’s Pearson Airport, marking the beginning of Huron’s highly regarded International Welcome Week. Throughout this week, students attend helpful activities, such as setting up bank accounts, obtaining social insurance numbers, and attending workshops on Canadian Culture and life in London, Ontario. But it’s also filled with fun moments – like trips to the beach – designed to help students feel at home in their new environment.
“I just want to ensure that they know they have someone fighting for them here. If my kids went halfway around the world, I would want to make sure there was someone who was there for them and was a hub of support for them so that they could find the help they needed,” Nicole shares.
Impact on International Students at Huron
Nicole embodies the Huron difference; a close-knit community that provides personalized care. Just as she felt supported when she first joined Huron, her goal is to extend that level of care to every student she meets. Working alongside her colleagues, Nicole ensures that students feel seen, heard, and valued – knowing they can have open conversations with their professors and support staff and never have to wait weeks or months for they help that they need.
“Nicole has been like a fairy godmother for many international students at Huron. No matter what happens, we know Nicole’s always got us. I am extremely grateful to have been able to get to know her; seeing her compassion, genuine care and love for international students makes us feel comfortable from the moment we get to know her. She has had one of the greatest impacts on me and is one of the people I will miss most after I graduate,” says Iqra, a 3rd year Huron student.
Nicole’s story is a testament to the power of human connection and community – both deeply imbedded in Huron’s values. Her impact is a reminder that all gestures, big or small, create ripples of change which can enrich the entire community.
