LONDON, ON – Richard (Richie) Bloomfield, Assistant Professor of Management and Organizational Studies at Huron University has been awarded a SSHRC Insight Development Grant for his project “Urban Agriculture: Understanding Successes and Failures in Policy and Practice.”
The project examines the impact of policy on urban agriculture processes in London, Ontario, and will use its findings to identify barriers, successes, and best practices in urban agriculture while exploring how it has changed in London since it was adopted into the city’s official plan.
As Richie notes, Urban Agriculture is “growing food within urban boundaries often with the intended goals of re-localization in an era of globalization, creating more sustainable cities, and improving access to good food for all residents.”
This project aims to “understand how policy can help or hinder urban agriculture through a comprehensive study of the impact of London, Ontario’s 2019 Urban Agriculture Strategy, and identify opportunities where urban agriculture participation can be further increased” Richie shares. “Our plan is to make sure the outcomes are broadly accessible including practitioner conferences, open-access publishing, 1-page public explainers, and community-based activities for families to engage with urban agriculture happening in their city.”
Richie will be working alongside Dr. Becky Ellis (Mohawk College), Dr. Deishin Lee (Ivey Business School), and Dr. Joe Nasr (Toronto Metropolitan University) to complete this research. A truly community-based project, the study has included a cohort of 25 interviewees and 41 workshop attendees, comprising community organizers, policymakers, urban planners, scholars, and environmental advocates engaged in London’s urban agriculture ecosystem.
