LONDON, ON – On December 7th, Huron was pleased to host a ground-breaking ceremony to officially announce the beginning of construction of the new residence building, the latest project in Huron’s ambitious expansion plans. Set to open in Fall 2024, the new residence building will feature 311 student rooms, lounges and study spaces, a state-of-the-art dining facility, a café, classrooms, seminar rooms and other important spaces. Not only will the new residence building provide much needed space for our growing community, but it will also allow us to continue our trajectory of growth by attracting talented students from across Canada and the world to live and study at Huron University.
“Our student population has increased by over 60% in the past 5 years, and it was imperative that we re-evaluate our campus facilities to ensure we have the infrastructure in place to accommodate more students, while still being able to deliver on Huron’s promise of small class sizes and tight-knit community,” said Barry Craig, President of Huron University.
The building was designed by architect Tom Tillmann and includes sustainable features such as a green roof, energy efficient equipment and systems, bird collision protection on critical windows and regional landscaping.
The new residence project follows the completion of the Frank Holmes Centre for Leadership, Ethics & Entrepreneurship, Huron’s comprehensive academic building that opened to students in Fall 2021.
Tillmann, who also designed the academic building, is excited to contribute to Huron’s expanding campus.
“I have a deep sense of gratitude to the Huron community for allowing me to bring my vision for this campus to life. I can’t wait to see how this new building will serve as a hub for student activity,” said Tillmann. “I’m especially proud of the sustainable features, which highlight our responsibility to build structures that are both efficient and environmentally-friendly.”
To achieve Tilmann’s vision, Huron has once again partnered with renowned construction company EllisDon, who also constructed Huron’s academic building.
In attendance at the event were Deputy Mayor Shawn Lewis and Ward Councillor Sam Trosow, who offered the city’s congratulations on the undertaking:
“On behalf of the City of London, we’d like to congratulate Huron on this achievement. Huron has been, and will continue to be, a great contributor to London’s standing as an education centre in Ontario. We’re proud for Huron on this day”.
The new project was made possible by a unique financial arrangement in the higher education space. Earlier this year, Huron became the first Canadian university affiliate to be publicly rated and issued bonds in the bond market.
