St. John’s Chapel at Huron University
Our Collegiate Chapel of St. John the Evangelist is an intimate worship space that was updated at the same time as Huron’s larger campus was constructed in 1951. Traditionally a place to train Anglican Priests, the chapel is collegiate in style, meaning that the pews face one another across the space, rather than facing the front of the building. The majestic stained-glass window at the centre, designed by W.T. Carter Shapland of England, bathes the church in natural light. The entire Chapel, including the balcony, can seat up to 140 people.
The Chapel is a beautiful space on campus, where many events—including non-faith-based activities—are held. There is no requirement for our students to engage in religious components, as part of their education or extracurricular activities, but we warmly welcome people from every background and faith to be involved with our community, both inside and outside the Chapel, as best aligns with their values and lived experiences.
The Chapel is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and available to the entire community as a calm, quiet space for prayer, reflection, and meditation. A place of architectural beauty and harmony as well as spiritual peace, the chapel serves as a parish in the Diocese of Huron today and enjoys a healthy and interfaith worship life.

Our Chaplain
Ten years ago, I had the good fortune of attending Huron University as a student completing the Master of Divinity (MDiv) program. Upon ordination as an Anglican Priest, I served at Holy Trinity Lucan, St. Aidan’s Anglican Church as well as Luke’s Place here in London, Ontario. I have had the good fortune to work as an on-call Chaplain at St. Joseph’s Health Care London, a Chaplain at Camp Wendake, and a volunteer Chaplain at London Health Sciences Centre. I have performed fundraisers across the world as an Elvis Tribute Artist; however, my sobriety and being able to minister about the joys of living without addiction is what I am truly proud of.
As the Huron University Chaplain, it is of paramount importance to be available to students, staff, and faculty and to welcome all spiritual traditions, expressions, and backgrounds. As your Chaplain, I consider it a privilege to be present on campus and welcome the opportunity to converse with each and every one of you. Whether it is to discuss your current spiritual journey, or to talk about everyday stressors, your story will always belong to you and be held in confidence.
The Chapel at Huron is a sanctuary that is open to everyone and anyone. If you are looking for a quiet space to escape the “business of life,” be still, and feel the presence of God, our Chapel is a safe space to do so.
I look forward with hope to my tenure as your Chaplain at Huron University. I believe we are all on this journey together and if I can help encourage you in some small way to find your path, then collectively we are blessed.
Sincerely,
The Reverend Matthew Martin, MDiv
