Weston International Scholars, Tyra and Nantume from Uganda

Tyra Kabugo and Nantume Masturah have been named the inaugural recipients of Huron’s Weston International Scholars Program, recognizing their resilience, leadership, and commitment to creating positive change.

Huron University is proud to announce a new program – the Weston International Scholars Program – aimed at expanding equitable access to Huron University’s world-class education on a global scale. The Program, which was made possible through a $1.8 million gift from The Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation, will offer full scholarships to twelve exceptional international students from underserved regions around the world.

Over the next five years, Huron will recruit students who have demonstrated resilience, academic promise, and a passion for community leadership in the face of adversity, offering each scholar a full-ride four-year Huron University undergraduate experience in Canada. The scholarship will cover tuition, residence, meals, books, student fees, and other ancillary costs to allow Weston International Scholars to focus on their studies and take advantage of the many leadership, career development and networking opportunities available to Huron students.

“At Huron, we believe that education should never be a privilege reserved for the few. It must be a pathway to opportunity for all. Supporting international students from marginalised communities is not just an act of compassion; it’s a commitment to justice. These students bring resilience, perspective, and a deep desire to lead with conscience. They make Huron a stronger community. By investing in their futures, we’re investing in a better and more equitable world.”
— Dr. Barry Craig, President, Huron University

As the program launches, we are pleased to announce the two inaugural Weston International Scholars arriving this fall:
Tyra Kabugo, Uganda, Social Sciences with an intended major of Global Rights Studies and recommended through the Second Chance program
Nantume Masturah, Uganda, Social Sciences with an intended major of Political Science

The program reflects Huron’s commitment to inclusive education, global citizenship, and social responsibility, with the goal of preparing graduates who lead with empathy, conscience, and integrity. By fostering opportunities for students to share lived experiences, diverse perspectives, and a deep commitment to social change, the Weston International Scholars Program is designed to enrich the intellectual and cultural life of the university. Its impact will be felt across campus as it encourages students to challenge and inspire one another, cultivating greater empathy, cross-cultural understanding, and a shared dedication to global responsibility.
