What can I borrow and access online?

  • Alumni are permitted to borrow regular loan materials. Short-term loan items are not available as they are reserved specifically to support the University’s teaching or research.
  • Alumni are not permitted extended loans, recall items on loan or use of the Interlibrary Loan Services.
  • On-campus access to most online resources and the Internet with temporary guest access is available at the library service desk.

What do I need to borrow library  materials?

  • In order to borrow materials, either a recent Western ONECard or a Western alumni card is necessary. If you have either of these cards, simply present it (plus one other piece of photo ID) to staff at Huron Library service desk Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and staff will set up an account immediately. If your alumni card has already been activated at a library, you may check out books anytime the library is open. Your alumni library account will have to be renewed annually by a library staff member.
  • To order an alumni card, please visit the  Western Alumni website.
  • On-campus access to most online resources and the Internet is available to alumni by presenting photo ID at the Huron Library service desk to obtain a temporary username/password.

Where can I borrow and return items?

  • You may borrow materials from the Huron Library, any of the Western Libraries and also from the libraries at Brescia, King’s and St. Peter’s Seminary.
  • Your valid Western ONECard or Alumni card may be used at the service desk of each library and at self checkout machines where available.
  • Regular loan and recalled items may be returned to Huron Library or any of the Western Libraries, Affiliated University College libraries and St. Peter’s Seminary.
  • Library material should be returned as soon as it is no longer needed so that it is available for use by others.

How long can I keep library materials?

  • Alumni are permitted to borrow regular loan materials for 28 days.
  • Any item you have borrowed may be recalled from you. You are assured of at least seven days use of the requested item before it must be returned. Recalled material must be returned by the date specified on the recall notice.

Can I renew items?

You may renew borrowed items online through My Library Account, or in person at any Service Desk. Renewals are unlimited with the exception of short-term loan, holds, or recalled items. Items cannot be renewed if your account has been sealed by university administration or suspended because of overdue items or fines that amount to $20 or more.


Individuals who are engaged in legitimate research or instructional, professional, or administrative activities and must have access to specialized collections for professional or job-related purposes on a short term basis are eligible to apply. Please fill out this  application form and return it to the Huron University College Library Circulation Desk.

Library Food & Drink Policy

What is permitted?

  • In order to maintain energy levels with studying, visitors to the Library may bring small, odourless food items in the following two, main floor spaces: the Library Lobby (adjacent to the Service Desk) and the Huron Commons.
  • Drinks are permitted throughout the Library, but must be in spill-proof containers with lids.
  • Food will be permitted in the Library for University functions held in our spaces, as well as in staff-only areas.

What is not permitted?

  • No hot food or foods with strong odours are permitted within the library.
  • Food is not permitted where either physical library materials or information technologies are present (e.g., computer workstations, collaborative technology tables).
  • Food is not permitted in group study rooms, the mezzanine, or individual study spaces in the stacks.
  • If you need to have lunch or dinner, we recommend you head over to the SAC, Dining Hall, or outside.

  • Accidents happen. Please report any spills to Library staff promptly.


  • As a courtesy to others, please dispose of waste in the appropriate receptacles in either the Library Lobby, or in the corridor outside the main entrance of the Library.


Library visitors in violation of the Food & Drink Policy may be asked to: discard their food; store it out of sight (e.g. in a bag or knapsack); and/or, to leave the Library. Thank you for doing your part to help us maintain a clean, welcoming study environment for all students.

Huron Library Accessibility

  • Library Facility: The main entrance to Huron University College is wheelchair accessible. This entrance is located near the Huron parking lot. An Information Desk is situated immediately inside the entrance; Info. Desk staff can give detailed instructions to locate the Library and may provide access to the main door of the Library via an elevator.   • Assistive Technology: The Library at Huron offers assistive technology for students with disabilities. An accessible workstation is located in the Huron Commons, situated on the main floor the Library. This workstation provides access to and includes a variety of assistive technology software including: JAWS, Dragon Naturally Speaking, and ZoomText, as well as word processing software. A stand-alone book scanner is connected to the accessible workstation. If you have any questions at all, please contact  Ryan Rabie, Digital Scholarship Librarian.
  • Alternative Format Texts: Services for Students with Disabilities at Western coordinate alternative format texts for course text books and course packs produced through The Bookstore @ Western.   • Reference Service: For research assistance please visit the Library’s Research Help Desk, which is located on the main floor within the Huron Commons. For in-depth assistance, you may  book a research consultation with  Patrick Gavin, Teaching and Learning Librarian.
  • Retrieval of Material: Library staff will retrieve books or journals from the stacks on request, and time permitting. Please inquire at the Service Desk. Call number and title information for each item will be required. In addition to in-person requests, the Service Desk will accept phone and email requests to retrieve materials Monday through Friday. It may also be possible to arrange an extended loan for most materials upon request. Note that most books borrowed from the Library at Huron or other Western Libraries locations may be renewed online for your convenience.
  • Photocopying & Scanning: The library also has two separate scanning devices that are free to use. Please inquire at the Service Desk.

Library Collection Policy

The library collection at Huron supports the students’ learning experiences by making available materials that can help with background readings and essay writing. Selecting new materials to be added to the library collection is a collaborative effort involving the faculty and the library staff. The faculty is largely responsible for recommending the acquisition of publications within their areas of expertise, while the library is responsible for monitoring and coordinating the development of the collection as a whole. Purchase requests can be based on material found in catalogues, reviews, etc., and can be sent to  Melissa Rapp, Content and Collections Librarian, or dropped off in the library at the Acquisitions Office.

Faculty can also be set up with a personal profile with one of our book providers, based on courses offered and research interests. This generates a search in their database of new publications at regular intervals and the results will generate an email with a link to these publications. Recommendations for purchase can be made from these. If you are interested in this, please contact  Melissa Rapp and she will, in consultation with you, set up a profile for you.
