Frequently Asked Questions

How are Residence Rooms Allocated?

Residence room placements will occur based on the time the completed application is received. On the residence application, students will be able to rank their room preference. Rooms will be assigned based on preference and availability.

Students will hear back about their specific room placements during the summer months.

When is the Deadline to Apply for Residence?

Residence applications open beginning January 19th, 2026 at 12PM (EST).

Huron’s residence is for students enrolling at Huron directly from high school who submit a residence application on or before their assigned deadline, May 6, 2026 at noon for applicants not currently enrolled in an Ontario high school and, June 4, 2026 a noon for applicants currently enrolled in an Ontario high school.

What Is the Difference Between Each Building?

Each of the residence buildings have some unique and distinctive aspects about them in terms of size, style, and types of rooms, as well as the placement of students to create specific communities within them.

Southwest  is made up of suite-style rooms that include 4 or 5 private bedrooms, 2 shared washrooms, a common seating area. Southwest is reserved for students with a high admission average and an interest in living in an Academic Learning Community. Students will be selected based upon their interest and entrance average, but placement in Southwest is a random lottery system through the online application program. Suite-mate requests cannot be accommodated for Southwest.

Hellmuth Hall contains single, double ‘pod’ and double rooms (some with traditional beds and some with loft beds). If you prefer to live with a roommate, you can request this on your application. The common area is located on the ground floor. The Hellmuth residence is attached to one wing of the main campus building.

O’Neil/Ridley is made up of three floors, two wings per floor, and consists of single rooms, single ‘pods’ and double bedrooms (some with traditional beds and some with loft beds). Students may wish to live in a “pod”, which is a cluster of single rooms with a shared washroom (between 4-7 students in each pod), accessible only to those students located in the pod area. Shared gender-specific washrooms are located on each floor in each wing, with a number of single gender-neutral washrooms also available for use.

Burnlea Hall is Huron’s largest residence on campus. It is made up of five residence floors, two wings per floor, and is entirely single-style rooms with a shared adjoined ensuite washroom. It has two lounges per floor, a large ground floor lounge, laundry facilities and classrooms within the building. This residence is also home to Huron’s new Dining Hall facility.

What Living Learning Communities Does Huron Residence Offer?

Huron currently has four Learning Communities available for students.

The Academic Learning Community, typically located in Southwest, is ideal for students who desire living arrangements that are most conducive to focus and quiet studying, as well as programming and floor events that promote academic success.

The Leadership Learning Community is ideal for students interested in student leadership opportunities and who plan to get involved in various clubs or student government while at Huron.

The All-Female Learning Community is designed for female identifying students who wish to live amongst a community of other females. The opportunities to be involved within the community are centred around building relationships with other residents, as well as leadership opportunities and programming for women.

The Health & Wellness Learning Community is designed for students who are passionate about or interested in learning more about all aspects of health and wellness, from physical activity and nutrition, to mental health and social connectivity. Students will be provided with regular opportunities to engage in programming with their peers in this subject area.

In addition to our Learning Communities, students may also indicate an interest in living amongst non-drinking students and/or be placed amongst students that identify as allies of the LGBTQ2+ community. We will do our best to place students in close proximity to one another who have identified any of these areas as preferable for living arrangements, in order to facilitate community development, or to giving priority to placement within requested Learning Communities.

What Do I Need To Do After Getting Accepted Into Residence at Huron?

Once your application has been received in full (residence deposit received and all questions answered) you will be sent a series of documents to read, sign electronically, and return to us in the summer months. Confirmation of your placement in residence will not be sent out until these documents have been signed in the portal.

The documents for review include the Residence Contract, Residence Handbook, Residence Discipline Code, and the Huron Promise, a pledge we have developed highlighting our expectations around behaviour and attitudes that reflect our commitment to diversity, acceptance, integrity, and community. Room assignments will be communicated in the summer months leading up to move-in day.

The Residence Handbook will include all the details you need to know about what you can and cannot bring with you into the Residence, and the most important information you need to be successful while living on campus. Throughout the summer, you will also receive various emails and notifications related to Move-In Day and O-Week. Please continue to check your Western email as this will be the only form of communication from Housing moving forward.

What is the Move-in Date? Can I Move-in Early?

The official move-in date for Huron’s Residence will be released in summer 2026.

Can I Bring a Personal Refrigerator Into My Residence Room?

Residents are not permitted to bring personal refrigerators into the Residence buildings, however, they may rent personal refrigerators from Huron’s contractor, Coldex. This policy ensures that all refrigerators entering the residence building are safe, clean and energy-efficient. Place your order with Coldex and your fridge will be in your residence bedroom when you arrive to residence.

What is the Huron Residence Waitlist?

Huron University advises applicants to accept their offer of admission and apply for residence as soon as possible. If Huron Residence applications reach capacity per the first come first serve basis, a formal Waitlist will become available.

This Waitlist will become available as required and will be accessible via the Huron Connect Portal.

Applicants will not need to accept their offer to be added to the waitlist, if it opens. If a space becomes available, a Residence Waitlist applicant will be provided a personal Residence Application. Applicants will have 72 hours to complete the application and submit the required residence deposit.
