Assistant Professor, Chinese Studies

Yuanfang Zhang, PhD

After receiving a Ph.D. degree from the Department of East Asian Studies at University of Toronto in 2020, Dr. Yuanfang Zhang has been dedicated to teaching Chinese courses at Huron that aim to explore interdisciplinary approaches to history, political economy, culture, and society. With an interest in frontier research on the development of technology and how it shapes Chinese society, he is now committed in designing and teaching courses to reflect on how advanced technologies, such as AI, have brought about transformative changes to humanity in such areas as the imagination of a (dis)utopian future, the political economy of AI-powered mode of capital accumulation, the relationship between growth in business and technological development, and so on.

Trained as a historian specialized in critical theories and East Asian history, Dr. Zhang’s published work appears in leading journals such as Positions: Asia Critique.
