Professor, History

Amy Bell, PhD
Teaching at Huron is the privilege of my life. I love sparking students’ curiosity, introducing them to innovative research methods and tools, and helping them develop empathy for people and perspectives from the past.”

My research and teaching have evolved out of a specialization in modern British social history, to encompass a wide range of social, cultural and legal history. My current research focuses on the history of murder and capital punishment in Canada and England.  I love taking students out into the field — to archives, museums, historic sites and on trips farther afield — to experience history in all its forms. History is for everyone!

My fields of specialization are:

  • social and legal histories of murder
  • gender and the history of capital punishment
  • the Second World War: civilian experiences, and cultural memory
  • histories of emotion: love, fear and reactions to crime
  • sex and violence in the British Empire
  • spiritualism and psychic research
  • history of medicine: doctors, forensic pathology and abortion
  • photography as a historical source: studio, amateur and crime scene
