London, ON – What kind of future do we envision for Canada, and what does it ask of us today?
These questions form the foundation for Huron University’s flagship Nation Builder Program. In its inaugural year, the Program has already delivered meaningful results for students through innovative coursework, hands-on learning opportunities, exclusive internships, and direct engagement with influential leaders from across Canada.
Supported by The Schulich Foundation, the Program quickly became a defining part of the Huron experience, creating new opportunities for students to learn, lead, and build connections beyond the classroom.
Through learning experiences inside and outside the classroom, internships, and direct access to national leaders, students gained new perspectives, built professional connections, and explored issues shaping Canada’s future.
“After concluding the first year of the Nation Builder Program at Huron, it’s clear that students are being empowered to think bigger about the role they can play in shaping Canada’s future. Through experiential learning and direct access to leaders across sectors, students are building the confidence, leadership capacity, and entrepreneurial mindset needed to make a lasting impact.”

The results of the Program’s first year have already demonstrated the value and impact of investing in experiential learning, leadership development, and student opportunity.
In its inaugural year, the following milestones were achieved:
EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

The launch of Contours of Canada introduced a new for-credit learning experience that challenges students to think critically about Canada’s future. Through discussions with leaders and visits to organizations and institutions across sectors, students explore themes of prosperity, governance, identity, and sustainability while examining how these concepts shape communities, institutions, and public life.
“The Nation Builder Program has been one of the most memorable parts of my Huron experience,” explains Ava Papanikolaou. “The combination of field trips, guest speakers, and hands-on learning made it very different from a traditional university course and helped me become more open-minded and informed about the world around me.”

The Program’s emphasis on experiential learning also supports students’ professional development. While all Huron students benefit from guaranteed internship opportunities, Nation Builder students have access to exclusive internships with prominent employers in finance, consulting, energy, public policy, media, and law, gaining exposure to professional environments and meaningful work experience early in their academic journey. These competitive placements help students build professional networks, develop career-ready skills, and strengthen their prospects after graduation.
Nation Builder students also benefit from personalized career coaching and resume support, helping them translate their academic and internship experiences into future opportunities.
Building on the momentum of its first year, the Program will continue to expand by introducing additional Nation Builder courses in the upcoming academic year.
BRINGING NATIONAL LEADERS TO HURON

A key component of the Program is The President’s SPARK Speaker Series, which continues to bring leading voices from business, media, law, public policy, and research to Huron, creating opportunities for students and the broader community to engage with important issues shaping Canada and the world.
In these sessions, invited speakers engaged the Huron community on topics ranging from Canada’s economic future and banking transformation to entrepreneurship, sport integrity, and ethical leadership. Nation Builder students benefited from exclusive small-group receptions and networking opportunities with speakers, gaining direct access to leaders across a range of sectors. Many students cited these conversations as valuable to their confidence, leadership development, and career exploration.
The success of the Series shows in its reach, with attendance exceeding 300 participants per event.
Featured speakers have included:
BUILDING a community of future leaders

For many students, the Program’s greatest impact has come through the people they have met and the experiences they have shared. Exposure to diverse perspectives, meaningful mentorship, and a strong sense of community are recurring themes in student reflections.

“In each of our out trips, community leaders from all walks of life shared their insights with us,” says Julia Bohnen. “This immersion provides an edge that simply cannot be facilitated in a standard classroom setting. With access to these experiences and physical locations we were able to see how the concepts we discussed in class were active in the community.”
Other students have emphasized the value of exposure to diverse lived experiences and direct access to mentors they might not have otherwise encountered. Ultimately, people in the Program are its greatest asset.
“Being surrounded by individuals who are motivated to become Leaders with Heart creates a strong sense of community and shared purpose. I see this network supporting me by opening doors to collaboration, mentorship, and opportunities to drive positive change in the communities we serve in Canada and around the world,” notes Raam Gururajan.

As Huron prepares to welcome a second cohort and expand Nation Builder programming, the Program’s first year has already created meaningful opportunities for students and established a strong foundation for future growth. Through coursework, career opportunities, and connections with leaders across Canada, the Nation Builder Program is helping develop the next generation of thoughtful and engaged leaders while delivering on the transformational promise of a Huron education.
