London, ON – Huron University is pleased to announce a $1 million (USD) grant (approximately $1.4 million CAD) from Lilly Endowment Inc. to strengthen theological education and support emerging ministry leaders across the Anglican Church of Canada.

This transformative investment, one of the largest external grants in the Faculty of Theology’s history, will fund a Huron project entitled “Forming for the Future: Theological Education for Emerging Ministry Leadership.” The grant is provided through Lilly Endowment’s Pathways for Tomorrow initiative, which aims to help theological schools across the U.S. and Canada build long-term educational and financial capacity to prepare pastoral leaders for the challenges of modern ministry.

Building on the success of Huron’s Licentiate in Theology (L.Th.) program, an innovative continuing education pathway delivered in partnership with Anglican dioceses nationwide, the grant will enable significant program enhancements. These include a new supervised ministry mentorship program, a dedicated online learning platform, improved prior learning assessments, and increased recruitment and partnership capacity across the Anglican Church of Canada. The project will also create new pathways between Huron’s degree and non-degree programs, expanding opportunities for emerging lay and ordained leaders.

This good news from Lilly Endowment’s Pathways for Tomorrow initiative comes at a critical time for our Licentiate in Theology program,” says Dr. Dan Smith, Dean of Theology and Vice President, Academic at Huron. “Our L.Th. is the program of choice for many Canadian Anglicans seeking to deepen their faith and prepare for ministry in the Church and as we have grown, we have reached the limits of what we can do with existing resources and personnel. This Pathways funding will allow us to establish the effectiveness of the L.Th. program for years to come, while also building connections to our Master of Divinity (M.Div.) and Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S). programs.

Huron University is one of 163 theological schools across North America to receive Pathways for Tomorrow funding. These institutions represent a broad range of Christian traditions; evangelical, mainline Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, Pentecostal, Indigenous, and more – each committed to preparing leaders who will guide and revitalize congregations.

Theological schools have long played a central role for most denominations and church networks in preparing and supporting pastoral leaders who guide congregations,” said Christopher L. Coble, the Endowment’s Vice President for Religion. “These schools are paying close attention to the challenges churches are facing today and will face in the foreseeable future. The grants will help these schools engage in wide-ranging, innovative efforts to adapt their educational programs and build their financial capacities so they can better prepare pastors and lay ministers to effectively lead the congregations they will serve in the future.

Through this investment, Huron’s Faculty of Theology will continue to build on its over 160-year legacy of forming leaders of faith, compassion, and service, while expanding access to context-driven theological education across Canada.
