New board appointments bring national leadership in finance and law to support Huron University’s strategic growth.

London, ON – Huron University is pleased to announce the appointment of two distinguished leaders, Benjie Thomas, CEO of KPMG Canada, and Kyle S. Hartlen, Partner at Stewart McKelvey, to its Board of Governors.

These appointments reflect Huron’s continued focus on building a Board that brings diverse national leadership experience, deep sector expertise, and meaningful connections to the Huron community.

Benjie Thomas

Benjie Thomas is Chief Executive Officer and Senior Partner at KPMG in Canada, where he leads more than 10,000 professionals nationwide. He is also a member of KPMG’s Global Board and Global Council. With more than 30 years of experience advising Canada’s leading private equity funds and strategic buyers, Benjie has played a key role in some of the country’s most significant transactions. His sector experience includes private equity, telecommunications, manufacturing, distribution, retail, information, and entertainment.

Prior to becoming CEO, Benjie served as Canadian Managing Partner for KPMG’s Advisory practice, where he oversaw the operational and growth strategies of the firm’s Management Consulting, Risk Consulting, and Deal Advisory businesses. In 2019, he was named a Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants (FCPA).

Beyond his professional achievements, Benjie is deeply committed to education and community leadership. He serves on Huron University’s Board of Governors and contributes to several organizations, including the North York General Foundation, The York School Board, and the Advisory Council for the University of Waterloo.

Benjie’s connection to Huron is also personal: he was born and raised in London, Ontario, and his family has longstanding ties to both Huron and the Anglican Diocese of Huron.

Kyle St. Hartlen

Kyle S. Hartlen

Kyle S. Hartlen is a partner at Stewart McKelvey, where he specializes in mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, securities, and corporate governance. He has extensive experience leading complex transactions across Canada in both regulated and unregulated industries.

In addition to serving on Huron University’s Board of Governors, Kyle is a Trustee on the Board of Crombie REIT, contributing to governance and oversight as a member of its Human Resources Committee.

He holds an MBA (AMBA Gold Medal) and a combined JD (Juris Doctor) and HBA (Honours Business Administration, Ivey Scholar) from Western University and the Ivey Business School. His expertise in governance and corporate strategy will support Huron’s continued growth and institutional strength.

Kyle’s connection to Huron is both personal and long-standing. He began his academic journey at Huron in residence and met his wife, Dr. Claire Halstead (BA ’10), at Huron. Their shared connection to the University reflects a deep appreciation for Huron’s close-knit community and transformative student experience.

Strengthening Huron’s Future

Since establishing its Board of Governors in 2021, Huron has brought together leaders from prominent organizations across Canada, and beyond, to help guide the University’s strategic direction and expand its impact.

Benjie Thomas and Kyle S. Hartlen join a growing group of Governors dedicated to advancing Huron’s strategic priorities, supporting student success, and ensuring the University’s continued strength and long-term sustainability.
