London, ON – Huron University is excited to welcome The Honourable Erin O’Toole, whose extensive leadership experience will enrich both the Governance, Leadership & Ethics (GLE) department and Huron’s flagship Nation Builder Program. His contributions will deepen the university’s commitment to developing leaders of character and service.

A Distinguished Career Across Public Service, the Military, and the Private Sector

With a distinguished career spanning the military, the private sector, and public life, O’Toole brings a wealth of experience and insight to Huron. His decade of public service as the Member of Parliament for Durham included:

  • Serving as Minister of Veterans Affairs
  • Being appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade during trade negotiations with the European Union and countries in Asia and Latin America.
  • Leading the Official Opposition and serving as Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022

He also has extensive experience advising on economic security, defence, and international policy.

The Honourable Erin O’Toole

“I am deeply honoured to join Huron University,” said Erin O’Toole. “Huron has a long tradition of producing leaders who combine high intellectual rigour with a strong sense of service and good character. Our country needs the next generation of leaders to be versatile and better prepared to help our country navigate geopolitical uncertainty and polarization.

I look forward to working with students and faculty on exploring what responsible leadership looks like in a complex world, and how love of country, a strong ethical bearing and sense of service can guide decision-making in public life.”

O’Toole currently serves as President and Managing Director of ADIT North America, a global firm that advises clients on risk in their investment and operational decisions. He also remains a thought leader in Canada on issues of economic security, defence, and sovereign capability, and serves as a Distinguished Fellow at the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C.

Enriching Student Learning and Leadership Development

His extensive experience in service and commitment to Canada will offer Huron students valuable perspectives on:

  • leadership and ethics
  • citizenship
  • national identity
  • decision-making in complex environments

These insights align strongly with Huron’s mission to develop principled, globally minded leaders.

“We are thrilled to welcome The Honourable Erin O’Toole to the Huron community,” said Dr. Barry Craig, President of Huron University. “With his diverse background and passion for principled leadership, he will bring valuable real-world perspective to our students. His contributions will help prepare students to make meaningful contributions at home and around the world.”

Huron University is committed to providing students with hands-on learning opportunities that connect what they study in the classroom to the world beyond it. Mr. O’Toole will participate in his first Huron educational engagement in March for a lecture on geopolitical risks facing Canada and its allies. He will also be working with the Huron team on strengthening student engagement and developing the most robust program on civic-minded leadership in the country.
