LONDON, ON – Dr. Barry Craig has been appointed to a third term as President of Huron University – a unanimous decision by Huron’s Board of Governors. The renewal for Huron’s 17th President will see Dr. Craig lead the University into 2031.
For Dr. Craig, he is thrilled to build on Huron’s momentum as a global leader in liberal arts education.
“The highlight of my first two terms as President of Huron has been the enormous and diverse growth of our community. Our enrolment has more than doubled, but more than that, our students now come from every province in Canada and more than 50 countries around the world. The incredible diversity that is represented by these numbers enriches every member of the Huron family.”
During his second term, Dr. Craig led a comprehensive and engaging process to develop Huron’s new Strategic Plan, launching earlier in 2023. The community-focused strategic framework will be the backbone of Huron’s development over the next five years.
“I think the Board has signaled that they are 100% behind our mission. Our new Strategic Plan showed that the entire Huron community shared a vision for an institution that has a strong community internally, but also one that possesses an ambitious vision for engaging the world beyond the campus.”
During the development of the plan, Dr. Craig was inspired by the tremendous talent and passion of Huron’s faculty, staff, alumni and, most importantly, its students.
“We have accomplished so much together at Huron, but there is so much opportunity still before us. I want to see Huron become more diverse and more accessible for those who face barriers to attend. We already devote double the national average of funds to assist those with financial difficulties to attend university. And from a resource perspective, our faculty will continue to grow to meet student needs, just as our campus will continue to develop on what is already a beautiful setting for learning.”
Since Dr. Craig’s arrival on campus in July of 2016, Huron has witnessed dramatic changes. Enrollment has increased by 130%, while admission standards have risen to be among the highest in Canada. This September saw the proportion of students who identified Huron as their first-choice increase by 67%. In addition, nearly $100 million has been invested in campus development, including the 40,000 sq. ft Frank Holmes Centre for Leadership, Ethics & Entrepreneurship in 2021 and a new 300 bed residence, slated to open next July. Dr. Craig is proud to note all of this construction was self-funded without government support.
Dr. Craig is also excited to work closely with Western University’s President Alan Shepard in strengthening their affiliation partnership to offer the best student experience possible.
“I feel like the luckiest person in the world to be the President of Huron. I see so many lives changed by this wonderful place. I can’t wait to see what we do next!”
Media are invited to speak directly with Huron’s President, Dr. Barry Craig for commentary on the significance of the appointment and for more details on his vision for Huron’s future.
