Huron Alumnus Steps Up To Help Break Down Barriers For Current and Future Students
London ON – For Huron University alumnus Tim Duncanson, Class of ’90, making a $1 million donation was not only timely during the season of giving but was also the right thing to do. “I support Huron not only because I’m an alumnus and I have a strong connection here, but because I believe a broad liberal arts experience serves an important function to develop involved, active and open-minded citizens. Huron, especially under Dr. Barry Craig’s leadership, continues to nurture that important ideal, and provides students with the tools and confidence to develop as leaders who are ready to grapple with society’s ‘big questions’.”
Inspired by the calibre of a Huron education and the recent growth in Huron’s enrollment, Tim and his family’s new financial commitment will help ensure the best and brightest students—from across Canada and around the world—will have the opportunity to take full advantage of a Huron education, regardless of financial circumstances and other barriers to access.
Huron University President Dr. Barry Craig celebrates the generous support as Huron garners increased attention from prospective students and their families with applications doubling, along with the number of students who indicated Huron as their first choice for university. “The explosion of interest in recent years is a reflection of the unique experience that defines a Huron education. It’s also a testament to our incredible alumni network, including supporters like Tim, whose generosity ensures we can continue to deliver a unique and powerful educational experience that is accessible to all.”
As Huron’s student community grows, philanthropic gifts such as this will help Huron maintain one of the most robust scholarship and bursary programs in the country. “We continue to feel that any student with the drive and desire to be successful at Huron should have the opportunity to do so regardless of their financial capacity. Tim’s gift will help us achieve this mission,” Dr. Craig notes.
First-year Huron psychology student Julia Bohnen understands the value of donations like this, “Donor-funded scholarships shape lives, mine included. Thanks to the generosity of Huron supporters, I’ve been able to attend a one-of-a-kind university, overflowing with rich opportunities and individualized support.”
Tim Duncanson earned a BA in History in 1990 and an honorary degree from Huron in 2022, an MPP from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He served as Senior Advisor to Canada’s Deputy Minister of Finance from 2015 to 2022, and as Managing Director with Onex Corporation for 16 years, and is currently a partner at Kicking Horse Capital Inc. A longtime supporter of Huron and past Chair of the Executive Board (now Board of Governors), Duncanson and his family have also supported the University’s mission through significant investments in Huron’s Governance, Leadership & Ethics (GLE) program, the Duncanson Foyer in the Frank Holmes Centre, and through the Duncanson Family Scholarship in History.
“When we awarded Tim with the honorary degree, it was in recognition that he was a true Leader with Heart. Tim has achieved great success in both the business world and in public service. He has leveraged that success to lift up countless others, at Huron and beyond.”
Dr. Craig felt compelled to share a personal message for Tim and his family, “Thank you for showing our students that higher education is so much more than just a personal or private benefit; it also serves a public good and brings an obligation to contribute to build a stronger society.”
