London, ON – From leading student initiatives to making a lasting impact on campus, Jocelyn (Josie) Hadden isn’t just graduating from Huron – she’s leaving behind a legacy.
Josie’s journey at Huron University has been defined by her unwavering commitment to community, leadership, and embracing every opportunity that came her way. Beginning her university career during the pandemic, she understood the importance of connection – no matter the form.
What started as motivation to engage quickly became a passion for making a tangible impact. Whether serving on Students’ Council or establishing a jack.org chapter at Huron to promote mental health advocacy, Josie continuously looked for ways to uplift and support her peers.
Having taken many opportunities which led to impactful leadership, Josie wanted to go further and give her peers an opportunity to step onto the stage and into the limelight – literally.
Eager to give community members a platform to share their voices, Josie took on a new challenge. She acquired a license for TEDx, an event designed to bring together innovative thinkers, researchers, and community leaders to share inspiring ideas through engaging talks aimed to foster meaningful conversations and spark new ideas.
Organizing such a large-scale event was no small feat, but Josie embraced the challenge, leading a dedicated team through the complexities of planning and execution. Over three years, she learned invaluable lessons about teamwork, adaptability, and the power of giving people a platform to share their voices. “One job can impact various groups to various degrees. In general leadership, I have learned to make experiences as positive as it can be. Our event is only as successful as our weakest team,” she shares. Recently, TEDxWesternU celebrated the completion of its third annual symposium under Josie’s dedication and leadership.
While Josie was committed to impacting her wider community, she also remained connected to supporting first year students – knowing firsthand how transformative that guidance could be. As a Soph, she mentored and welcomed new students to Huron, just as her own Sophs had done for her.
Dedicating her inspiration to the Sophs who welcomed her to Huron, she shares, “I love Sophing because in my first year, my Sophs helped me. I thought it was so meaningful to transfer this knowledge and support incoming classes.” One of her proudest moments? Watching the very students she once mentored grow into leaders themselves – many even becoming Sophs.
Josie’s advice to students is simple but powerful: “Don’t be afraid of taking on leadership roles and take a chance on yourself.” Her time at Huron taught her that stepping out of her comfort zone, trusting her abilities, and leaning on the support around her led to incredible growth.
Graduating from the Management and Organizational Studies program at Huron later this year, Josie leads with a growth mindset and her legacy at Huron is one of leadership, resilience, and unwavering dedication to uplifting those around her. A true Leader with Heart, she has set an inspiring example for future Huron students – showing that passion and purpose can leave lasting change.
