London, ON – From studying liberal arts at Huron to exploring the business operations of one of India’s major international airports, two Huron students took their learning in an unexpected direction during paid internships at Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), India.
Tanvi Vattipally, a fourth-year Huron student studying for a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology, and Anisha Ramchandani, a fifth-year Huron student completing a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Governance, Leadership and Ethics, and Thanatology, gained hands-on experience in the aviation industry.
CONNECTING STUDENTS WITH GLOBAL BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES
Through Huron’s India Advisory Committee, which helps strengthen partnerships with business and industry leaders in India, Vattipally and Ramchandani secured internship opportunities at BIAL as Strategy and Development Interns.
The Fairfax Centre for Free Enterprise (FCFE) at Huron, which helps students explore the role of free enterprise in innovation and economic prosperity, also supported the students by helping them connect with mentors during their internships.
Both students found that their internships exceeded their expectations. Vattipally was surprised by the scale and complexity of airport operations, discovering how businesses ranging from food and beverage to duty-free retail work together within a larger airport ecosystem. Ramchandani gained more hands-on experience than she initially anticipated, contributing to projects alongside teams that trusted her to take on meaningful responsibilities.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AT WORK
Their internships at BIAL gave Vattipally and Ramchandani a new perspective on the complexity of airport operations. Both students appreciated India’s warmth and hospitality during their interactions with mentors and co-workers at BIAL.
Vattipally credited her experiences at Huron with helping her become more adaptable and comfortable learning as she goes, even without a clear roadmap to follow. Her internship at BIAL gave her the opportunity to apply that mindset in an unfamiliar industry.
“What really surprised me is how many businesses are involved at the airport and how large an ecosystem it really is,” Vattipally said.
She also appreciated BIAL’s commitment to sustainability and its wider contribution to Bengaluru, recognizing the importance of reducing noise, air pollution, and waste, as well as supporting broader climate action initiatives in the aviation industry.
Ramchandani appreciated how Huron taught her to be confident when approaching unfamiliar situations. Although she initially expected to gain only a basic understanding of the aviation industry, she was surprised by the hands-on experience and responsibility she received while working alongside BIAL teams.
“Huron taught me to be comfortable with the unfamiliar. So, coming into an industry that I did not have a lot of background knowledge or information on, I was not really scared or intimidated,” Ramchandani said.
She also appreciated the trust her colleagues placed in her, giving her opportunities to contribute to ongoing projects and gain practical experience in an industry she had not previously considered.
In reflecting on their overall experience this summer, both students highly encourage fellow Huron students considering an internship abroad to be curious, adaptable, and ready to say yes to new opportunities.

FROM HURON TO ANYWHERE
At Huron, all students are guaranteed the opportunity to participate in a paid internship, connecting their classroom learning with workplace experience, supported by one-on-one career planning and academic advising.
Huron’s interdisciplinary approach to liberal arts education encourages students to explore different perspectives, develop transferable skills, and apply their learning across industries. Vattipally and Ramchandani’s internships at BIAL this summer demonstrate how this foundation can prepare students to pursue opportunities in fields beyond their areas of study.
