LONDON, ON – Even before she started in Huron’s Psychology program, first year student Matia Sinclair embodied what it means to be a Leader with Heart.
Excelling in her academics, balancing extracurriculars and sports, and volunteering in several ways empowered her to make a strong impact in her community, as well as grow into an emerging young leader.
As a result of her hard work, dedication, and perseverance, Huron University is pleased to announce that Matia is this year’s recipient of the Waugh Family Foundation Award for Horatio Alger Scholars.
In partnership with the Waugh Family Foundation and the Horatio Alger Association of Canada, this award is presented annually to a Horatio Alger Scholar, selected in recognition of their perseverance through adversity, academic achievements, and leadership potential. In addition to the Waugh Family Foundation Award, Horatio Alger Scholars also receive funding for post-secondary studies and mentorship from accomplished leaders.
“Matia has always demonstrated kindness and an overall compassion for others, even though she has had to overcome numerous personal struggles during her earlier fundamental years” her former guidance counsellor, Shelley Tucker says. She emphasizes Matia’s perseverance and dedication to excellence, adding “Matia has managed to effectively balance both extremely successful academics and a very busy extracurricular schedule, involved in volleyball, basketball, soccer, coaching, various clubs, and many community volunteer interests.”
Huron’s mission of Leadership with Heart encourages students to engage in civic responsibility and compassion towards others in tandem with their academic and professional journeys. For Matia, the mission of Huron aligned well with her focus on community impact and academic growth.
“I am incredibly grateful for the Horatio Alger Association and Waugh Family Foundation’s support and belief in me. This scholarship will allow me to pursue my dream of studying at Huron where small class sizes and a tight knit campus will give me a real opportunity to connect with my professors and peers. I feel like Huron is a place that helps students thrive and achieve their goals and I’m excited to be a part of this community.”
This award serves as a testament to Matia’s unwavering dedication and pursuit of excellence. Through the next four years of her studies at Huron, she is sure to make a lasting impact on the university’s community and the world beyond.
The Waugh Family Foundation Award was established in 2022 through a generous gift from the Waugh Family Foundation. The Award reflects the Foundation’s commitment to ensuring that a high-quality education is accessible to all students, regardless of financial need, and aligns with the Foundation’s longstanding support and engagement with both Huron and the Horatio Alger Association of Canada.
Huron and the Horatio Alger Association of Canada are grateful to the Waugh Family Foundation, to President Richard E. Waugh (who also serves as Treasurer of the Horatio Alger Association of Canada), and to Director David Waugh (Huron alumnus, Class of 2003).
