CEO of Empire Company Limited and Sobeys Inc. Michael Medline speaks with Dr. Barry Craig at the inaugural President’s SPARK Series, moderated by Steve Paikin, OC, OOnt, in Schulich Hall at Huron University.

London, ON – Huron launched the inaugural Nation Builder Program “President’s SPARK Series” with an engaged audience and a candid conversation featuring Michael Medline (BA ’84), one of Canada’s most respected business leaders, moderated by award-winning journalist Steve Paikin, OC, OOnt. The event, titled Building Canada’s Future, was made possible by the generosity of the Schulich Foundation, Huron’s founding partner for the Nation Builder Program.

President Dr. Barry Craig opened with thanks to the Schulich Foundation and a story about the naming of Schulich Hall, then introduced Medline, whose career includes leading two iconic Canadian companies: first Canadian Tire, then Empire Company Limited, parent company of Sobeys Inc. banner stores. Medline also serves Huron as a Board member and Vice-Chair, and is deeply engaged in philanthropy through SickKids, the Sobeys Foundation, and the BlackNorth Initiative.

Why a liberal arts foundation still wins

Starting the conversation about building a strong and united future for Canada, Medline credited Huron with shaping how he thinks, decides, and leads. “I’d be nothing without Huron,” he said, describing the power of a close community inside a major university, great teachers in history, and student leadership that stretched his perspective. The small-college environment, he said, teaches critical thinking and breadth; traits that make leaders adaptable as industries shift.

Dr. Craig echoed the value of the humanities at a time when the impulse is to treat education as short-term job training. Liberal arts, he argued, build habits of mind that equip citizens to question, reason, and contribute long after specific tools change.

Career advice students can use now

Asked what he would tell his 20-year-old self, Medline was blunt: stop chasing the next rung and enjoy doing great work where you are. Reflecting on his own career, Medline said he learned to focus on doing great work and enjoying the job at hand, trusting that the future will take care of itself and that if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, it’s worth finding work you love where your effort is valued. Dr. Craig offered a related lesson for students and parents alike: “Start with what brings genuine happiness and purpose, not a guess at which major pays most in 20 years”.

Ethics is not optional

On leadership character, Medline’s message was clear: “Your name is all you’ve got.” You can be competitive and kind, play within the rules, and still win. In a small country like Canada, reputations form quickly and endure. “Short-term corner-cutting might make headlines”, he said, “but it is not a long-term strategy for a 40–year career”.

On Canada’s competitiveness: Be Bold and Move Fast

Turning to the economy, Medline warned that Canada’s productivity problem predates any single political moment. High taxes, interprovincial trade barriers, and slow, duplicative regulation make it hard to do business and keep head offices in Canada. His counsel was clear: “Be bold. Move fast.” Use this moment to cut internal barriers, modernize regulation, and rebuild a climate that invites investment and innovation.

Dr. Craig called for renewed public investment in education, noting the long-term social and economic returns when more people access high-quality learning. He also praised today’s students for being more engaged and sophisticated about public life than past generations – an advantage Canada cannot afford to waste.

A community that keeps giving back

The event closed with student thanks to the Schulich Foundation, a reception in the Medline Student Commons, and complimentary copies of Seymour Schulich’s national bestseller Get Smarter: Life and Business Lessons for attendees. Nation Builder Program students were also invited to a private reception, where they had the opportunity to network with Michael Medline, Steve Paikin, and David Schulich. This inspiring chance to connect directly with leaders who embody the program’s values is an example of the exclusive opportunities available through the Nation Builder Program.
