Applications to Huron Increased by 30% for Fall 2023. Here’s Why.

LONDON, ON - Huron’s promise of a well-rounded liberal arts education complemented by experiential learning opportunities and guaranteed paid internships is resonating with students from across Canada and around the world, with application numbers for the Fall 2023 semester up 30% over last year.
Huron team members have been busy meeting with and supporting prospective students in almost every province in Canada and multiple continents around the world.
“We’ve found that meeting students in-person and providing personalized support have always been key differentiators for us. Each of our recruitment team members are Huron alumni, which allows us to share our passion for Huron with prospective students and provide them with genuine advice and recommendations from our first-hand lived experiences. More than ever, students and parents realize the wealth of unique opportunities at Huron that simply aren’t available at larger schools,” said Moustafa Ezz, AVP, Recruitment & International Relations. “I would like to express immense gratitude to school counsellors across Canada and around the world who have worked tirelessly to support their students’ applications to Huron, helping them meet deadlines and writing Letters of Recommendation that help us truly understand the character and fit of students, beyond their grades alone.”
Another factor leading to the growth in applications is the appeal of Huron’s continued innovation, both in academic offerings and university facilities. This year, two new specializations were added to Huron’s Management and Organizational Studies program, a new Minor in Environmental Stewardship was added to the Governance, Leadership & Ethics program, and a new Minor in Global Art and Music within the Global Great Books program will be launching in September. In terms of facilities, construction of a new state-of-the-art residence facility broke ground in the latter part of 2022.
While Huron’s 160-year legacy of cultivating many of Canada’s most impactful leaders along with exciting new plans for our programs and campus are a major draw for many, incoming student Anusha Das from India describes her motivations for accepting her offer of admission as being aligned with what she expects in becoming a member of the Huron community.
“Huron lives up to its tagline Leaders with Heart,” said Das. “The leaders from the university leave no stone unturned to make aspirants like me feel special. Flying down to India to personally hand over the letters of acceptance was indeed a unique gesture that struck an instant chord. Right from day one, the admission team has been always there to guide me and very quickly help with any kind of query, no matter how insignificant it seemed. My overall experience has convinced me that Huron is going to be a home away from home.”
As part of a long-term plan to provide more accessible admissions opportunities for students in Canada and around the world, Huron has launched new scholarship opportunities that are among the most generous in Canada. These have generated interest from both students and college counselors around the world. Dr. Barry Craig, President and Vice-Chancellor of Huron, sees this as a natural progression of the vision he believed was possible when he arrived at Huron.
“We talk about guiding our students to become leaders with heart, but it doesn’t carry any weight unless we as an institution set an example. Our new scholarship opportunities for high-achieving students in need is one of the ways we are making an education at Huron more accessible to all students, regardless of their financial situation,” said Dr. Craig.
With one of Canada’s highest entrance averages, admission at Huron is competitive. With the surge in applications this year, early indicators suggest that the additional applications consist primarily of students who are in the upper percentile of their graduating class both academically and in terms of community and leadership impact. Students who have been admitted that wish to attend Huron and live on campus are encouraged to accept their offer as soon as possible in order to secure their residence rooms.
