National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR) is observed annually on September 30. The day is meant to honour and commemorate the survivors of, and children who were lost to, Canada’s Indian Residential School (IRS) system, and to remember the painful history and ongoing impacts of colonialism in Canada.
This year, Monday, September 30 will be a non-instructional day at Huron and Western. This annual designation is intended to provide all individuals within our campus community with an opportunity to engage meaningfully with relevant events.
While NDTR is a day observed annually, the work of Truth and Reconciliation must be embraced daily to foster meaningful and lasting change.

HUCSC Orange Shirt Sales: Sept 23, 2024 – Sept 26, 2024
Front Lobby, Frank Holmes Centre
The HUCSC will be selling Orange T-Shirts in the lobby of the Frank Holmes Centre, to recognize September 30th and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Proceeds from the purchase of a shirt will support the Woodland Cultural Centre. Shirts can be purchased in person, or at this Link.

Lights Shine Orange: Sept 24, 2024 – Oct 6, 2024
Traffic Circle at Huron University
The lights on the Eagle Tree of Peace Circle will shine orange, to honour and commemorate the survivors of, and children who were lost to, Canada’s Indian Residential School (IRS) system, and to remember the painful history, connections and ongoing impacts of colonialism in Canada.

Truth and Reconciliation Service: Sept 25, 2024 from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm
Chapel and Front Lawn, Huron University
The Faculty of Theology will hold a service in observance of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation (September 30th). Our preacher will be Archdeacon Rosalyn Elm, Indigenous Ministries Coordinator for the Anglican Church of Canada and Archdeacon for Reconciliation and Indigenous Ministries in the Diocese of Huron. Archdeacon Ros is also Rector of the Parish of Six Nations and a Huron Theology alumna.
Immediately following the service (at approximately 12:20 p.m.), on the lawn in front of the Chapel, we will plant orange flags to honour those Indigenous children who survived Residential Schools, such as the Mohawk Institute, and in memory of those who did not survive. All are welcome to attend and take part in this solemn time of reflection. Please plan to join us – and wear your Orange Shirt if possible.

The Western Fair District Agriplex
This event is hosted by Chippewas of the Thames First Nation with local indigenous vendors and musicians throughout the weekend. Open to all community members.

Sunrise Ceremony: Sept 30, 2024 from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Wampum Learning Lodge, 1137 Western Rd., Suite 1200, London, ON
Huron is proud to be a sponsor of the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation Sunrise Ceremony at the Wampum Learning Lodge. An Elder-led Sunrise Ceremony and lighting of the Sacred Fire will take place. Everyone is welcome to attend to quietly reflect, offer prayers, and connect with others at the Wampum Learning Lodge. Guests are encouraged to wear an Orange Shirt and arrive between 6:30 and 6:45 a.m. Register here!
Breakfast refreshments will be provided beginning at 8:00 a.m. Additional teachings will begin following the breakfast break. Guests can park in a metered parking spot opposite the Wampum Learning Lodge or in the back lot to the left. If you are interested in walking, the Wampum Learning Lodge is approximately 10 minutes from campus. See location below in map.

Eagle Tree of Peace Statue – Turning Circle at Huron University
Led by Tom Peace, Associate Professor, History
The community is welcome to gather and stencil images of footwear in reminder that we are on the traditional territory of Indigenous peoples.
As part of our commitment to reconciliation on the land we share, Huron recently partnered with Indigenous artist Leroy Henry to design and install the Eagle Tree of Peace statue, which is a center piece at the Huron University quad.
We invite the community to learn more about this statue and take some time to reflect and remember. Information cards will also be handed out at the HUCSC table in the Frank Holmes Centre.

Indigenous Film Installation: Sept 30, 2024 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm
Huron Library
Art and storytelling, combined with traditional knowledge sharing, are depicted in these five short films by Indigenous filmmakers. The screenings will take place from 11:00 – 1:00pm and again from 3:00 – 5:00pm in the Library Learning Commons.
