Campus Vigil for the National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women
Please join us on December 6 at 5pm for our Campus Vigil for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
The vigil will commemorate the lives of the 14 young women who were killed at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on December 6, 1989, and honour all victims and survivors of gender-based violence. Mary Lou Smoke will be among those at the vigil to recognize the disproportionate violence inflicted on Indigenous women and girls, and the resilience and strength of survivors.
Beginning at 2pm, there will be two booths inside the Frank Holmes Centre. The “Clothesline Project” table allows Huron students to write messages to or for victims and survivors. Outside the theatre, there will be white ribbons and donations collected for Anova, a local nonprofit organization that supports survivors and works to prevent violence. Donations can also be made here: https://gofund.me/ab515b94
Throughout the day, the Chapel will have space open for anyone who would like to light a candle in remembrance and engage in quiet reflection. The candlelight vigil station will be open from 2-5:30pm. Additionally, Wellness Peer Educator, Ella Benzie, will be in H119 from 4:30-6pm. She can assist students in accessing resources to support anyone who may be struggling with the emotional impact of the day and event.
The vigil is organized by the students in MOS 2182: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Organizations.
