Emily Abbott, Class of 2019
Associate, Freshfields US LLP
Washington, D.C.

What have you been up to since graduation?

Since graduating, I attended law school at the University of Virginia and have been building my career in Washington, D.C. as an antitrust/competition lawyer. I advise clients across a range of industries on government investigations, mergers and acquisitions, and regulatory compliance. An exciting opportunity has been embarking on a client secondment, where I am gaining first-hand perspective on how legal advice is applied to business considerations.

How did Huron’s History program prepare you for your career?

Huron’s History program gave me a strong foundation in critical thinking, research, and writing — skills that I use every day as a lawyer. These abilities have been essential in approaching legal problems, crafting arguments, and advising clients in a thoughtful and effective way.

What stands out most from your Huron experience?

Academically, I really valued opportunities to engage in undergraduate research and present my findings through initiatives like CURL (Centre for Undergraduate Research Learning). Bartending at the Beaver Dam—especially during a HUDS musical (Huron Underground Dramatic Society)—was also a highlight.

Did you have a favourite History class or professor?

One of my favourite classes was American Dreams, which explored how ideas have shaped society. Conducting archival research with Dr. Reid-Maroney and Dr. Peace was particularly memorable, as it allowed me to engage deeply with primary sources and develop my analytical skills.

How have you stayed connected to your classmates and to Huron since graduating?

I’ve enjoyed staying connected with my classmates and the broader Huron alumni network. Establishing a graduation award in memory of my father (The Neil S. Abbott Memorial Award), a fellow Huron alumnus, has been a particularly meaningful way to maintain my connection to Huron.

What passions/interests motivate you outside of your professional life?

Outside of work, I enjoy travelling (35 countries and counting), trying new restaurants in D.C., and exploring state and national parks with my dog. I’m also studying for my sommelier certification inspired in part by my semester studying in Reims, France through Western’s study abroad program.
