FAQ

When should I start looking for internships or jobs?

As early as possible! Some roles, especially competitive summer internships, have deadlines months in advance. Start searching in the fall or early winter.

What if I don’t have any experience?

You likely have more than you think, course projects, volunteering, leadership roles, and part-time jobs all count. Focus on transferable skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

How many jobs should I apply to?

There’s no perfect number but aim for quality and quantity. Apply broadly but tailor each application. Set realistic weekly goals to stay motivated.

Should I write a cover letter for every application?

Yes, unless the posting says not to. A tailored cover letter shows effort and can help you stand out from other applicants.

Is it okay to apply to jobs if I don’t meet all the qualifications?

Absolutely. If you meet most of the requirements and are willing to learn, go for it. Use your cover letter to show how you’ll bridge any gaps.

I applied to a job and haven’t heard back. What should I do?

Wait about 1–2 weeks, then consider sending a polite follow-up email. Not every employer replies, so keep applying to other roles too.

What do I say when networking?

Start with a short introduction and express interest in the person’s field. Ask about their career path, current role, or any advice they’d offer someone starting out.

What’s the best way to network if I’m shy or introverted?

Start small and take manageable steps. Try reaching out to alumni on LinkedIn, attending a career fair or virtual panel, or asking a professor for an introduction. Networking doesn’t have to be high-pressure, it can be authentic, low-key, and still highly meaningful.

Should I follow up after an interview?

Yes, send a thank-you email within 24 hours. Reaffirm your interest and mention something specific you appreciated during the conversation.

What is a reasonable timeline for hearing back?

It varies, but 1–3 weeks is typical. If it’s been longer, a polite follow-up is fine, just keep moving forward with other applications in the meantime.

How do I talk about myself in an interview?

Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers. Practice with a career coach or mock interview tool to build confidence.

What should I wear to a job interview or fair?

Business casual is usually a safe bet. If you’re unsure, look up the company culture or ask your coach. When in doubt, it’s better to be slightly overdressed than under-dressed.

What is VMock, and how do I use it?

VMock is an AI-powered resume review tool. Upload your resume to get instant feedback and suggestions for improvement. Access VMock here.
