DESCRIPTION:Join public historian Zahra McDoom in spirited conversation with dance artist, Joey Hollingsworth, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ontario Black History Society in 2018.\nOutstanding Black Canadian tap dancer Joey Hollingsworth talks about his early days in London, Ontario. Growing up, in a small three-room apartment close to the railroads in 1930s SoHo, he learned to tap on his linoleum floors. As a child he danced in a minstrel show, for much-needed pay, to the dismay of his father.\nAs a teenager Hollingsworth left for Toronto and boarded at the YMCA in pursuit of stardom; and he made it! Hollingsworth became the first Black man to appear on the CBC national television in the 1950s. In 1962, he performed on the iconic television variety show, the Ed Sullivan show, with a slick tap and Congo drum routine. Hollingsworth shares his experience playing at a segregated club in Dallas, Texas and performing on civil rights shows in Toronto for Martin Luther King Jr, alongside legendary performers like Oscar Peterson and Harry Belafonte.\n \n
